Selecting Your First Case

Choosing a topic that resonates with your audience is essential for establishing your Schwartz Rounds® program. Some organizations find that focusing their first Schwartz Rounds on a topic (rather than on a single case) allows for broader participation and engagement. Topics can help participants understand that Schwartz Rounds are not about the medical details of a specific case. Some find that a certain case will be especially meaningful for discussion. We recommend selecting the approach that is best for your organization.

Some popular topic ideas for our members’ first Schwartz Rounds are:

  • A Patient I’ll Never Forget
  • Caring for a Colleague
  • My Why
  • Coping with Uncertainty
  • “I Couldn’t Do It Without You:” Colleagues Who Make a Difference

Consider:

  • What will resonate with most with staff across your organization?
  • What current events in your organization and the world are impacting staff and patients?
  • How will the topic you choose support a conversation about the social and emotional aspects of healthcare and the necessity of compassion for self and others?
