Debriefing After Schwartz Rounds®

After each Schwartz Rounds, the Schwartz Rounds Leadership Team should coordinate a time to debrief. Some Schwartz Rounds teams take the opportunity to hold their debrief meeting immediately after the session while everyone is in the same space at the same time; others plan a dedicated time to regroup.

Planning Committee Debrief

When debriefing with the Planning Committee, consider the facilitation and logistics of the meeting. Use the evaluations from participants to gain their perspectives. Ask the team:

  • What went well?
  • What can we do differently next time?

Use the Schwartz Rounds Observation Checklist to assess the session and brainstorm ways to change and improve your process for the next session.

Panel Debrief

Debrief with panelists and ask them:

  • What went well?
  • What are some ways we can assist future panelists?

If a panelist experienced strong negative emotion while on the panel, ensure that they have access to the resources they need.

Post-Session Activities

During debriefing sessions, Planning Committee and Leadership Team members should make plans to complete important Post-Session activities. These include:

  • Collect evaluations from participants
  • Tabulate quantitative and qualitative results from session evaluations
  • Send summary of evaluation results to rounds@theschwartzcenter.org
  • Log Your Schwartz Rounds by submitting your Schwartz Rounds Session Information Form
  • Make a note of any participants or panelists who experienced strong negative emotions. Determine if follow-up is required and who will be responsible for the follow-up.
  • If suggestions were made during the session related to potential changes in practice or policy, determine who to notify and how.
