Facilitating Through Disruptions or Challenges

Schwartz Rounds® Facilitators should be prepared to manage a variety of situations during Schwartz Rounds.

How to Use the Facilitation Modules

Each of the Schwartz Rounds modules below includes a demonstration of key facilitation skills. The modules are comprised of steps you can use to refresh or improve your skills as a facilitator.

Feel free to watch each module independently or in succession. A handout of the slides can be downloaded here for your reference.

Case Summary for Facilitation Training Video

In a small community hospital, the Emergency Room received a call that EMTs were bringing in a 2-week-old baby who had been sleeping on her father’s chest when he awoke and found her unresponsive. The physician on-call assembled a team and reviewed roles and the treatment plan. The team received the infant from an EMT “running faster than I have ever seen anyone run,” according to one of the nurses, and then worked tirelessly on the baby, although those who had direct contact with her were aware from the outset that the medical outcome was likely to be poor.

The mother was in the room watching the team as they attempted to resuscitate her baby. The father and other family members arrived shortly thereafter and were present for the remaining time of the code. As planned, after 15 minutes of treatment, the physician called the code.

Our Schwartz Rounds panelists include:

  • Nurse “recorder,” whose job was to document the care provided to the infant;
  • Nurse who assisted with the code and comforted the parents;
  • Respiratory therapist who attempted to resuscitate the baby.

This Schwartz Rounds session was filmed as a demonstration Rounds during one of our Facilitation Workshops.
